Open letter to George Will; To Whom Shall We Turn?

Mr. Will,

I would like to comment on your argument with Rev. Sharpton on TV this morning regarding whether the people need protection by or from the government.  I know that you are a very smart and sincere man; clearly much smarter than I, so I am not challenging your contention that the people need protection from the government.  In many ways I know that this is true, especially where the IRS is involved.  I am also quite sure that former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman would agree with you as well.  I will however ask you to please help me understand how such a surprisingly simplistic point of view deals with the following set of facts:

In order to support and protect corporate profits, a half-million Americans with health insurance will go bankrupt this year because of medical bills.  Another half million families with no insurance will be forced to do the same.  America is the ONLY country in the developed world that allows such an unbelievable situation to exist.  How is it that you show so little concern for an issue of such great importance as this?

The latest Harvard study shows that 47,000 Americans will die this year due to lack of health insurance.  Would it be unfair to describe this as a uniquely American form of genocide?  You tell me.  As a “pro lifer” how can you possibly allow this situation to go on without lifting a finger in protest?  Again, the only reason that this problem exists is to support and protect corporate profits and as before, such a thing is absolutely unheard of in any other civilized country on the planet.  How do you feel about that?

Finally, the private health insurance industry, in order to support their skyrocketing profits, bloated CEO salaries and enormous administrative costs brought about by the existence of 1300 redundant paperwork systems competing with each other will drain between $3 trillion and $4 trillion dollars from our health care system over the next ten years and contribute NOT ONE NICKLE of value in return.  As a fiscal conservative, how is it that this does not seem to generate even the slightest spark of outrage in you?  Actually, you know, there are countries in the world where these sorts of things are completely illegal.

Most objective thinking people would find these situations disgustingly immoral and completely unacceptable yet they seem to have so little effect on you and the folks that think the way you do?  May I sincerely ask why that is?  I suppose that you could deal with all of this by just saying that none of these things are true but then you would be lying to yourself and that is not a sign of good mental health.

So as I said Mr. Will, can you please help me understand how, in your perfect conservative world, the people are protected from the corporations?  If not by the government… then by whom?

Thank you for your very kind attention.
